Amid rising concerns over illegal disposable e-cigarettes flooding the U.S. and hooking teens, the Food and Drug Administration is taking aggressive action to get the flavored vapes off American shelves.
Recently testifying before Congress on the youth vaping epidemic, FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said stemming the influx of unauthorized disposable vapes requires an “all-of-government approach.” Now his agency is mobilizing to snuff out this threat targeting America’s kids.
China Exporting Candy-Flavored Vapes Lacing U.S. Schools
Per the FDA, many illicit disposable vapes originate from Chinese manufacturers mislabeling fruity, sweet-flavored products to evade U.S. regulations barring kid-friendly e-cigarette flavors.
These illegal cotton candy and sour apple nicotine vapes have spread rapidly across middle and high schools nationwide. Some contain not just nicotine but fentanyl too, causing life-threatening overdoses in at least two Georgia teens last year.
State and Federal Action on Youth Vaping Crisis
Alarmed by this menacing trend, Georgia schools now deploy vape detectors and detection dogs to find contraband vaping devices. And in Congress, legislation aimed at manufacturers and distributors of unlawful disposable vapes is gaining momentum.
The FDA itself recently unveiled an enforcement policy targeting firms producing, selling and importing unauthorized e-cigarette products. This regulatory crackdown seems the agency’s most forceful action yet to curb youth vaping rates.
Strict New Import Controls on Illicit Vape Makers
Califf’s FDA has since issued warning letters to certain disposable vape producers and distributors while enacting tight import restrictions on other foreign manufacturers flooding America with illegal nicotine devices.
These strict regulatory measures against major sources of unauthorized vapes send a stern warning to those profiting off youth addiction. Early indications suggest flavored disposable vapes may already be disappearing from U.S. store shelves.
“The FDA’s campaign against illegal vape imports provides hope to parents feeling helpless against youth nicotine addiction,” said health advocate Joan Ellis. “If these candy-flavored vapes vanish for good, we can finally start reversing this epidemic targeting our kids.”
